VIGILANTE CABIN (MT), MTDescriptionAvailable Yearlong. Located along the Ruby River between the Snowcrest and Gravelly mountain ranges, this is a popular spot for fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, gold panning and hiking. The elevation is 6100 feet. The three buildings at the Vigilante Guard Station were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s. These are not the traditional log cabins, but are white, clap board sided, wood frame structures. The Middle House is available for rent by the public. The other two houses on the site are still used by Forest Service personnel and volunteers during the year and not available for public use. The rental house has electricity with lights, refrigerator, range/oven and water heater. There are four rooms a living room, kitchen and two bedrooms. There is a bunkbed and single bed in each bedroom, providing a sleeping capacity of six. The bathroom, which has a sink, shower and toilet, is available only in summer months, usually June through September. It is sealed off during the remaining months when the entire water system is winterized. There is a concrete outhouse east of the house. There is a wood stove for heat and firewood is provided, stacked east of the house along the fence.
