YOUNG LAKE (SOUTH) CABIN (AK), AK

Description

This cabin is located on Young Lake, which is on the north end of Admiralty Island. It should not be confused with North Young Lake Cabin, which is also on the lake. Both deer and brown bear can be seen in the area. This is a one-room cabin with four bunks that can sleep up to six people. Cabin is equipped with wooden bunks, table, and benches, and has an outside toilet. It is heated with an oil stove. There is no longer a wood stove. It does not have mattresses or cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring their own sleeping bags, pads, cook stoves, cooking gear and food. A skiff with oars is provided. Cabin users should bring personal flotation devices and may also choose to bring a small outboard motor (less than 10 horsepower due to wilderness regulations). There is a 1-mile trail along the lake shore leading to the North Young Lake cabin. From the North Young cabin, a 5 mile trail leads to Admiralty Cove. The person holding the reservation must be 18, and must be a member of the party using the cabin. Use of this cabin by a commercial operator, such as an outfitter or guide, is NOT allowed. Visitors are asked to carry out all that they bring in. There are NO discounts for Golden Age or Golden Passports for Alaska cabin rentals. Access by floatplane only. This cabin is a designated Wilderness area, and access by helicopter is illegal. There are no discounts for Golden Age/Passports for Alaska cabin rentals. Reservations are restricted to a maximum stay of 7 consecutive nights per party for any one reservation May 1- September 30 and a maximum stay of 10 consecutive nights per party October 1- April 30.

Effective November 17, 2003, reservations for Alaska cabins will be subject to a new policy allowing only one change per reservation. A change in reservation is defined as a modification to the start or end date of the reservation. After one change has been made, if additional changes are desired, the customer must cancel the reservation and at a later time, re-book the new dates. This policy has been established to assure that reservations for cabins are fair and equitable for everyone.

The YOUNG LAKE (SOUTH) CABIN will be closed from 06/21/10 - 07/02/10.

You may reserve this cabin on the day of arrival, or up to 180 days in advance. Treat or boil water before consumption. In the fall, winter and spring, the lake may be frozen and the cabin inaccessible to floatplanes. Please contact Admiralty National Monument prior to making reservations during these periods. Occasionally poor weather may result in extended stays, and cabin users should be prepared for this. All garbage and food must be packed out.

As of 9/15/2008 the North and South Young Lake cabins have oil stoves and no wood stoves. Users should bring #1 heating oil (Kerosene) to fuel the stove. The stoves will burn half a gallon in 8 hours at the lowest setting, and up to 1.2 gallons during 8 hours at the highest setting. A flash light is handy for looking into the burn chamber when lighting the stove. Matches or a lighter are needed to light a small piece of paper to drop in to the burn chamber when lighting the stove. Located on Young lake which is on the north end of Admiralty Lake. The cabin is near the southern end of the lake, on the eastern shore. Floatplane access only. This cabin is in a designated Wilderness area, and access by helicopter is illegal. One-way flight time from Juneau is 20 minutes.
