SEEDHOUSE GUARD STATION (CO), CO

Description

This historic Forest Service guard station is located approximately 26 miles north of Steamboat Springs, CO on the Routt National Forest. It was constructed in 1933 and is available for reservations in the fall and winter months (Sept 01 - April 30). There is no running water available during winter months but there is a large pot provided for melting snow and an outhouse located behind the guard station. There is no electricity or cell phone service at the guard station. The two-room cabin is equipped with propane range/oven, refrigerator, lights and a propane heater. It sleeps 4 people on 2 bunk beds with mattresses. No linens or bedding are provided. Dishes, pots, pans and utensils are provided. There is a fire pit and a picnic table outside the cabin that is accessible in the fall. Firewood is available on site. Horses may be kept in the corral or in the pasture, fencing is not provided. If you bring hay it must be certified weed free. No smoking is allowed in the guard station. No pets are allowed in the guard station. Fall access to the guard station is over both paved and gravel/dirt roads. Road conditions are variable and 4 wheel drive vehicles are recommended. Winter access to the guard station is by ski or snowmobile only. Parking is available at the end of county maintenance. The distance from a plowed road to the guard station is approximately 3.5 miles. The main road in is a groomed snowmobile trail, but you may have to break trail into the guard station. The snow country opportunities are endless. Be sure to bring topographic maps and winter survival gear. Snowmobilers please respect the Mount Zirkel Wilderness boundary and keep all motorized activity out of the wilderness.

Alerts and Important Information

Reservations must be made at least two days in advance. Seedhouse guard station will not have water during winter months. Please bring in water, or plan to melt snow. Fall road access may be limited by winter conditions. It is the renters' responsibility to know forest and state regulations.

The guard station is located about 26 miles north of Steamboat Springs, CO, on the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest. From Steamboat Springs, take Hwy 40 west and turn right on County Road 129. Head north on 129 (toward Clark) about 18 miles. One mile after Clark, take the first right after crossing the Elk River, Routt County Road 64, which is also FSR 400. Stay on this for 8 miles and the guard station is behind a locked gate, tucked in some trees on the left, across from the Seedhouse Campground. The last three miles is a dirt road and is not maintained in the winter.
