MOUNT RYNDA CABIN (AK), AK

Located on the south side of the Stikine River at the confluence of Andrew Creek and Andrew Slough, within the Stikine-LeConte Wilderness. Built in 1963, this 16' x 16' A-frame cabin has a sleeping capacity of 7 people, with 2 single bunks (1 with trundle) and a second floor loft. The cabin also has a table and benches, an oil stove for heat (#1 oil only), a broom, and an outhouse. There is a partially covered front porch with a built-in bench and a wooden cooler box for food storage. There is no phone access. The cabin has no mattresses or cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring sleeping bags, pads, cookstove, cooking gear, utensils, food, and #1 stove oil. The cabin sits up on the riverbank and overlooks the confluence of Andrew Creek and Andrew Slough. The immediate area in front of the cabin is moderately steep. The surrounding area is primarily Sitka spruce and western hemlock. Brown and black bear, moose, and bald eagles inhabit the area.

Effective November 17, 2003, reservations for Alaska cabins will be subject to a new policy allowing only one change per reservation. A change in reservation is defined as a modification to the start or end date of the reservation. After one change has been made, if additional changes are desired, the customer must cancel the reservation and at a later time, re-book the new dates. This policy has been established to assure that reservations for cabins are fair and equitable for everyone.

Reservations can be made the day of arrival, or up to 180 days in advance. Boil or treat drinking water before consumption. Pack out all garbage. Occasionally poor weather can result in extended stays, and cabin users should be prepared for this. River levels affect access. Click here to see the Stikine River level at the Shakes Gage. Reservations are restricted to a maximum stay of 7 consecutive nights per party for any one reservation May 1 - September 30 and a maximum stay of 10 consecutive nights per party October 1 - April 30. Cabin is equipped with wooden bunks, table, benches, oil stove for heat, & an outhouse. It does not have cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring their own sleeping bags, pads, cook stoves, cooking gear, #1 stove oil, and food. The person holding the reservation must be 18, and must be a member of the party using the cabin. Use of this cabin by a commercial operator, such as an outfitter or guide, is NOT allowed. There are NO discounts for Golden Age or Golden Access Passports for Alaska cabin rentals. Tides and river level affect access to this cabin. Please consult local tide table and river level when planning your trip. This cabin is in a designated Wilderness area, and access by helicopter is illegal.

Accessible by shallow draft boat during moderate to high river levels, 18 miles from Wrangell. The river level at the Shakes Gage is posted online at www.usgs.gov. Low river levels limit small boat access as the Andrew Creek entrance becomes blocked. Tides may affect access; consult local tide tables. A tide of 14' or higher is needed for a shallow draft boat to cross the tide flats. The river is normally ice-free May to October. Check local conditions before you go.
