MAY CREEK CABIN (MT), MT

Description

The history of the May Creek Cabin is not well documented. We believe the cabin was built by miners in the early part of the 1900's and was used by miners up to the 1930 or 1940's. Hunters took over the cabin for about 30 years but did not have a valid claim or ownership of the cabin and were asked to vacate the cabin in the early 1960s. The cabin was vacant for about 30 years. By the 1990 the cabin consisted of a roof and walls. In 1993 the Bitterroot Nordic Ski Club suggested the Forest Service salvage the cabin and made it a rental cabin. Volunteers from the club and Forest Service worked together to rescue the cabin for skiers and summer visitors. The cabin is a one-room log cabin. It has four bunk beds with mattresses, a wood-burning heating stove and a propane cook stove. It is equipped with table, benches, a cooking and eating utensils, axe, shovel, bucket, cleaning gear and firewood. The cabin has no electricity or running water. There is a rustic outdoor toilet.

This facility is available for rental DEC 01 to MAR 31 yearly and from July 5th to the Tuesday after Labor Day.

Many visitors wonder why the cabin is not available until July 5. The area is an elk calving area and the dates were established to avoid wildlife harassment.
Cross-country skiing and exploring the area around the cabin are activities people enjoy in the winter.
Renters need to supply their own Water, Food, Bedding, and a propane canister for the propane lantern.
