MALLARD SLOUGH CABIN (AK), AK

Description: Built in 1980, this 16'x16' modified A-frame cabin sleeps 7 people with a second floor loft and 2 single bunks (1 with trundle). The cabin also has a partial loft, table and benches, woodstove for heat, woodshed (wood provided), splitting maul, broom, and an outhouse. A small deck wraps around two sides of the cabin, and there is a cooler box for food storage is attached to the cabin. The cabin has no phone access, and no mattresses or cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring sleeping bags, pads, cookstove, cooking gear, and food.

Trail: The Mallard Slough Trail is a 2.7 mile footpath from the cabin to LeConte Bay. The trail has minimal surfacing the first 0.4 mile, and none thereafter.

Proximity: The immediate area around the cabin is relatively flat with grass and shrubs growing on the tide flats. The cabin is in the fringe between tide flats and spruce-hemlock forest. Behind the cabin are low to moderate forest hills. Wildflowers are prominent in May and June. LeConte Glacier is within boating distance of the cabin at high tide. There are icebergs in LeConte Bay and in Fredrick Sound along the Horn Cliffs.

Wildlife: Brown and black bears, bald eagles, owls, hawks, and moose inhabit the area. Waterfowl and shorebirds are there seasonally. The Stikine River tidal flats are a major stopover spot during spring and fall bird migrations.


Effective November 17, 2003, reservations for Alaska cabins will be subject to a new policy allowing only one change per reservation. A change in reservation is defined as a modification to the start or end date of the reservation. After one change has been made, if additional changes are desired, the customer must cancel the reservation and at a later time, re-book the new dates. This policy has been established to assure that reservations for cabins are fair and equitable for everyone.

The Mallard Slough Cabin is on mainland between LeConte Bay and the North Arm of the Stikine River, on the Stikine River delta in the Stikine-LeConte Wilderness.
This cabin is accessible by shallow draft boat or floatplane, 18 miles by air or 20-22 miles by boat from Wrangell or Petersburg. Tides affect access to this cabin; please consult local tide tables. Access generally requires a high tide of 14' or higher for shallow draft boat, or 16' or higher for a floatplane.

Occasionally poor weather can result in extended stays, and cabin users should be prepared for this. Reservations are restricted to a maximum stay of 7 consecutive nights per party for any one reservation May 1 - September 30 and a maximum stay of 10 consecutive nights per party October 1 - April 30. Cabin is equipped with wooden bunks, table, benches, wood stove for heat, & an outhouse. It does not have cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring their own sleeping bags, pads, cook stoves, cooking gear, oil, and food. The person holding the reservation must be 18, and must be a member of the party using the cabin. Use of this cabin by a commercial operator, such as an outfitter or guide, is NOT allowed. There are NO discounts for Golden Age or Golden Access Passports for Alaska cabin rentals. This cabin is in a designated Wilderness area, and access by shallow draft boat only.
