LAKE WINFIELD SCOTT REC (GA), GA

Description

The Lake Winfield Scott Recreation Area is located on the Blue Ridge Ranger District (formerly the Brasstown Ranger District) within the beautiful northeast Georgia mountains. Pristine water and scenic views draw visitors from around the state and region.

The Blue Ridge Ranger District Office is located just three miles west of Blairsville, GA off of Highway 515, on the north side of the highway. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM, but it is recommended that visitors call before arriving to confirm that an information receptionist is on staff.

The Lake Winfield Scott Recreation Area offers visitors year-round recreation opportunities including camping, picnicking, boating, swimming and hiking centered around beautiful Lake Winfield Scott.

The nearest convenience store and gas station are located in Suches, Georgia, about five miles southwest of the campground. The nearest full-service grocery stores and shopping villages are located in Blairsville, Georgia, approximately thirty minutes north along U.S. Highway 19/129.

SWIMMING - The Lake Winfield Scott Beach includes a designated swimming area, picnic tables, bathhouse, pavilions (by reservation only), playground and trash bins.

HIKING - There are day-use hiking trails within the Lake Winfield Scott Recreation Area ideal for a short stroll, including one which parallels the lakeshore (.4 mi). In addition, the Jarrard Gap Trail (1 mi.) and Slaughter Creek Trail (2.7 mi) begin the Lake Winfield Scott Recreation Area and connect to the Appalachian Trail.

BOATING - Lake Winfield Scott is open to human-powered and electric motor boats only.

FISHING - Fishing for catfish, trout, perch, brim and bass in the lake is a popular activity. See the Georgia Department of Natural Resources for a complete listing of freshwater fishing regulations for Lake Winfield Scott.

Visitors to the National Forest are responsible for knowing the rules and regulations of the forest. Visitor maps for the Chattahoochee National Forest can be obtained by calling the Forest Service Office in Blairsville, Georgia at 706-745-6928 or by visiting www.fs.fed.us/conf/.
