LAST CHANCE (AK), AKDescriptionLocated in the Ward Lake Recreation Area, 9 miles north of downtown Ketchikan, approximately 4 miles north of the State ferry terminal.Campground is immediately adjacent to Ward Creek. It is surrounded by an old-growth temperate rainforest comprised primarily of western hemlock and Sitka spruce. The Ward Lake Recreation Area boasts seven trails, as well as a large day-use complex with picnic sites and shelters. There is easy access to freshwater fishing, wildlife viewing, and scenery. Open the Friday before Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. All campsites must be vacated the Tuesday after the Labor Day. Campground is designated to be fully accessible and barrier-free. Many campsites are available both by reservation and to walk-in campers. Reservations will be posted in advance. Some sites are non-reservable and only available to walk-in campers. Each campsite contains; picnic table, fire ring with grill, and gravel parking spurs. Campsites are designated to accomodate up to 10 people and one vehicle. See list of site-specific information for RV length limits for parking spurs. Campground has three handpumps for drinking water and three vault outhouses. Firewood may be provided but is not guranteed. Firewood and other assistance may be obtained from the campground host located in Signal Creek Campground (2 miles). Services & Amenities:
Alerts and Important InformationCampground does not have electricity, running water, hookups, or dump station. The City of Ketchikan operates a free RV dumping station at the City Public Works facility on Tongass Ave., just north of the State ferry terminal. Maximum stay at in the Ward Lake Recreation Area is 14 days. This applies to both campgrounds combined (Signal Creek and Last Chance) i.e., one may not stay 14 days at one campground and an additional 14 days at the other. Black bears frequent the area, especially during August and September. All food should be stored inside closed vehicles. Use of the campground or campground road spurs by commercial operators, outfitters, or guides is not permitted. Pets MUST be leashed. Quiet hours are from 10pm util 6am. Fires in fire circles only. No discharge of firearms or fireworks. Occupy site within 24 hours or forfeit. Getting There:Last Chance (AK)TONGASS-KETCHIKAN AK GPS Info.
