KOOK LAKE CABIN (AK), AK

Kook Lake Cabin is set amidst a beautiful stand of spruce and hemlock on the west end of the lake, surrounded by flat terrain with a sandy beach. Mountains rise sharply around the lake, and evidence of past logging is visible from the east end of the lake.This primitive, A-frame cabin is equipped with a sleeping loft, woodenbunks, table, benches, woodstove for heat, and an outhouse. It has no mattresses or cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring sleeping bags,pads, cookstove, cooking gear, and food. A skiff with oars is provided for cabin users only; bring personal flotation devices. A 2-10 HP longshaft outboard motor (not provided) enhances use of the skiff. Brown bear frequent the area, rain gear and boots are a necessity, firewood may be scarce and the cabin is not maintained in the winter.

Activities: Cutthroat trout, sockeye salmon, coho salmon and Dolly Varden fishing. Bear hunting season. Kook Lake Trail (0.7 mile) leads to the logging road from cabin. The person holding the reservation must be 18 and member of the party using the cabin. Reservations are restricted to a maximum stay of 7 consecutive nights per party for any one reservation May 1 - September 30 and a maximum stay of 10 consecutive nights per party October 1 - April 30.

Effective November 17, 2003, reservations for Alaska cabins will be subject to a new policy allowing only one change per reservation. A change in reservation is defined as a modification to the start or end date of the reservation. After one change has been made, if additional changes are desired, the customer must cancel the reservation and at a later time, re-book the new dates. This policy has been established to assure that reservations for cabins are fair and equitable for everyone.

There are NO discounts for Golden Age and Golden Passports for Alaska cabin rentals.

Kook Lake Cabin will be closed from July 19, 2010 through July 26, 2010 for Maintenance. Reservations can be made on the day of arrival or up to 180 days in advance. Occasionally poor weather can cause travel delays, and cabin users should be prepared for this. Boil or treat stream water. All garbage and food must be packed out. December through early May, the cabin may be inaccessible due to frozen lake surface (floatplanes cannot land). Please contact the local Forest Service Ranger District office for current information prior to making reservations during these periods.

Accessible May through November. Located near the eastern shore of Chichagof Island between the outlets of Tenakee Inlet and Peril Strait, about 45 miles northeast of Sitka. Access is by floatplane, 30 minutes from Sitka or Juneau; or by boating to Corner Bay, and hiking 7 miles on logging road and 0.7 mile on Kook Lake Trail to the cabin.
