KOKNUK CABIN (AK), AK

Description: Built in 1963, this 12'x14' Pan Abode cabin slepes 4 people with 2 single and 2 double bunks. The cabin also has a table and benches, broom, oil stove (#1 oil ONLY), and an outhouse. A wooden cooler box is attached to the cabin for food storage. The cabin has no mattresses or cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring sleeping bags, pads, cookstove, cooking gear, food, and #1 stove oil. The cabin has no phone access.

Proximity: The cabin is in the fringe between tide flats, alder, and willow trees. The surrounding area is relatively flat with grass, shrubs, willow, and alder growing on the tide flats. Wildflowers are prominent in May and June.

Wildlife: Bald eagles, hawks, moose, brown and black bear inhabit the area. Waterfowl and shorebirds are there seasonally. The Stikine River tidal flats are a major stopover spot during the spring and fall bird migrations.


Effective November 17, 2003, reservations for Alaska cabins will be subject to a new policy allowing only one change per reservation. A change in reservation is defined as a modification to the start or end date of the reservation. After one change has been made, if additional changes are desired, the customer must cancel the reservation and at a later time, re-book the new dates. This policy has been established to assure that reservations for cabins are fair and equitable for everyone.

Reservations can be made the day of arrival, or up to 180 days in advance. Boil or treat water before drinking. Pack out all garbage. Occasionally poor can result in extended stays, and cabin users should be prepared for this. Reservations are restricted to a maximum stay of 7 consecutive nights per party for any one reservation May 1 - September 30 and a maximum stay of 10 consecutive nights per party October 1 - April 30. Cabin is equipped with wooden bunks, table, benches, oil stove for heat, & an outhouse. It does not have cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring their own sleeping bags, pads, cook stoves, cooking gear, #1 stove oil, and food. The person holding the reservation must be 18, and must be a member of the party using the cabin. Use of this cabin by a commercial operator, such as an outfitter or guide, is NOT allowed. There are NO discounts for Golden Age or Golden Access Passports for Alaska cabin rentals. This cabin is in a designated Wilderness area, and access by helicopter is illegal.

This cabin is on the west side of Sergief Island on the Stikine River delta, in the Stikine-LeConte Wilderness. The cabin is accessible by shallow draft boat only, 10 miles from Wrangell or 8 miles from the boat ramp on the south end of Mitkof Island. Tides affect access. Boat access requires a tide of 16 feet or higher, plus a short walk to the cabin. Please consult local tide tables. View Regional MapMap Driving Route
