GODMAN GUARD STATION (WA), WA

Description

The Godman Guard Station, built in the 1930s, is a two-story, wood frame structure with wood siding and wood shakes on the roof. The building features three bedrooms, a living area, kitchen and bathroom. It is furnished with three bunk beds, two single beds, a couch, table and chairs. During the summer months, visitors may use the indoor flush toilet; otherwise an outhouse is located near the cabin. The kitchen is equipped with a propane stove and refrigerator. Visitors will need to bring their own dishes, cooking/eating utensils and own pots and pans. There are propane lights and heat throughout the cabin.

Horses are allowed, and there is a barn approximately 200 yards up the hill from the cabin. There is a picnic table close to the cabin for outdoor dining.

Water is currently unavailable at this site. An outhouse is provided nearby.

Scenic drives along the Kendall-Skyline Road and views into the Wenaha-Tucannon Wilderness are easily accessible from the cabin.. The complex is adjacent to an historic CCC campground, as well as a trailhead to the Wenaha-Tucannon Wilderness. Horse and hiker trails into the wilderness can be easily accessed from the cabin.

Winter access can be made by snowmobile or cross country skis. A groomed snowmobile trail passes right by the cabin.

Alerts and Important Information

Reservations must be made at least 3 days in advance. Entry to the cabin is by combination lock. Please call the Pomeroy Ranger District at 509-843-1891 one week prior to your check-in date for the combination to the cabin.

No Discounts - cabin is reservable at full price only! No exceptions. Fees for this site will be increasing. Please check under fees for increased amounts. We do not accept Golden Age, Veterans or any other discount for this cabin.

Due to budget cuts this site will not have running water this year. There are no indoor restroom, shower or bath facilities available. There is no potable water at this site. Visitors must bring plenty of water for drinking, cooking and washing.

Please bring your own garbage bags and clean the facility before you leave. This is a Pack it in, Pack it out site.

Please bring sleeping bags/bedding, as well as a flashlight or lantern for emergencies, first aid kit, washcloths and towels, and dish soap.

All Forest Service Cabin Rentals are No Smoking facilities.

Please contact the Ranger District prior to arriving at the cabin/lookout rental to check on any restrictions or conditions, such as fire closures, road, weather or storms, etc., that may affect the quality of your visit.

If you have children or pets, please be aware that this facility may have mice killing poison (d-con) placed within its perimeter.

This site is located approximately 28 miles southeast of Dayton, Washington on the Umatilla National Forest. From Dayton, travel 4th Street south for 6 blocks, and turn east on Eckler Mountain Road (also turn off for cemetery) for approximately 15 miles. Turn right at the Y in the road. Continue on Forest Service Road (FSR) 46 for 12 miles to Godman. The guard station will be on the left. The site is accessible to vehicles from mid to late June until mid October to the first of November.

Winter use will require alternate transportation such as skis, snowshoes, or snowmobile. From Dayton, Washington, travel 4th Street south. Follow road directions to Bluewood Ski Area. Before the entrance to the Ski area, park in the available snowmobile parking area at Touchet Corral. Travel the groomed snowmobile route, taking all lefts to Godman, approximately 13 miles. There are directional signs along the route put up by the local snowmobile club. Although visitors may ski to the cabin, the route is difficult and for advanced skiers only. A Washington State Sno-Park permit is required to park at the Sno-Park.
