From South Cottonwood:
Hike approximately 6 miles up the South Cottonwood Trail (#422).
Once you cross the big meadow 1/2 miles from the trailhead, go 1/2 mile more to the History Rock Trail Junction. Don't go east until you see the sign.
Where the South Cottonwood Trail intersects with the
History Rock Trail (#424), take the History Rock Trail east for a
short distance and cross a newly constructed footbridge following
a new trail route up away from the creek; the trail shortly
intersects with the old History Rock trail and you will see a cabin
sign pointing right.
Follow this trail to a newly constructed footbridge across Fox Creek and go left in the meadow after the bridge.
The cabin is in the timber and difficult to see, so you must walk to the left, away from the creek, in order to find it.

Elevation 6710 ft.
In the winter on snowshoes plan on around 5 hours.
From Hyalite Canyon:
From Main Street in Bozeman, drive down South 19th for approximately 7 miles until you reach Hyalite Canyon Road (#62). Turn left and proceed up the canyon. Hyalite Canyon Road is not plowed in the winter. Travel about 6 miles up the canyon to Langohr Road (#1046) just past the Langohr Campground. Turn right.
Proceed about 4 miles near to the end of Langhor Road, to a fork in the road. Take the left fork, which leads to a switchback climb through a clear-cut with the last section getting fairly rough and rutted. The clear-cut ends at the top of the ridge between Hyalite and S. Cottonwood, and you should park at the small opening off to the left as you gain the ridge.
Just before the ridge top, a spur trail with a large dirt hump in the middle heads back to the south to meet the main History Rock trail after 150yds, and there is a sign where you join the trail.
Once you reach the History Rock trail (#424), turn right, or southwest, and follow it 2.5 miles. The trail forks just before S. Cottonwood Creek. Go left at this fork.
Watch for cabin signs. You will cross Fox Creek at the bottom on a newly constructed footbridge (2003), but you will not cross South Cottonwood Creek. Staying to the left is a good rule for finding the cabin and staying on the trail.
The small cabin is to your left. After the new bridge, follow the trail through the timber another 50yds to the meadow and go left even though you can't see the cabin, as it is not visible from the meadow. The cabin is in the timber back toward the drainage you just came down.
