PFEIFFER BIG SUR SP, CA

Description

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park has 1,006 acres of redwoods, conifers, oaks, sycamores, cottonwoods, maples, alders and willows - plus open meadows. Park is bordered by redwood and oak forests, chaparral slopes of the Santa Lucia Mountains. Wildlife includes fox, raccoons, skunks, and birds, such as American dippers and belted kingfishers. Hikers can enjoy the many scenic trails, including a self-guided nature loop. Park has 8 miles of hiking trails; 210 miles of hiking trails in the nearby Ventana Wilderness (USFS) BE ADVISED: Several trails in the State Park and Ventana Wilderness remain closed due to fire and flood damage. Overlooks provide spectacular views of the Big Sur Valley and the Big Sur River Gorge. Campsites are on the valley floor through which the Big Sur River flows. A limited amount of overnight enroute camping MAY be available 5pm to 9am, when the campground is full, for self-contained vehicles only. Steelhead season usually opens in December, West of Highway 1 bridge, only on Saturdays, Sundays, Wednesdays, legal holidays and opening and closing days through February. Please see Department of Fish and Game regulations for fishing in the park. The concessionaire-operated Big Sur Lodge provides motel-type cottage accommodations (1-800- 424-4787). The group picnic sites may be reserved by contacting the park (831-667-2315). Fishing is permitted in-season ONLY and only on the west side of Highway 1.

Alerts and Important Information

  • Discount Pass MUST be presented at time of check in.
  • Reservations will be accepted for Sites 1 through 7 and 38 through 218 from May 22, 2009, through October 31, 2009. Parts of Main Camp (sites 10-37) will be closed to camping in 2009 due to construction. Camping availability on a first-come, first served basis after October 31, 2009 will be evaluated as conditions change. Pfeiffer Big Sur is Site Specific for reservations. You will select your site at the time your reservation is made.
  • Maximum TWO vehicles per campsite. This includes trailers and other towed vehicles. Overnight extra vehicle parking in the day use area is extremely limited and not guaranteed.
  • Please read the site size. All your equipment including trailers, extra vehicles, awnings, and slideouts MUST fit within the parking boundary.
  • Fees include entry for 1 vehicle and 1 legally towed vehicle or trailer. Additional vehicles will be charged per night at the park.
  • Maximum length restrictions: 27 feet for 5ft wheels and trailers, 32 feet for motorhomes. Maximum height restrictions: 12 feet.
  • ONLY registered campers will be allowed into the campground. Due to congestion and traffic constraints, free passes for deliveries or passenger drop off are not permitted.
  • 2:00 p.m. check-in and 12:00 p.m. check out times will be strictly enforced due to traffic congestion considerations.
  • Dogs must be on a maximum 6 foot leash and attended at all times. Dogs are not allowed on trails or in the Big Sur river gorge.
  • Maximum occupancy is 8 people per campsite.
  • Quiet Hours: 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Generator Hours: 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m
  • During peak season this park has a maximum stay limit of 7 consecutive nights. Once the consecutive night limit has been reached, the person(s), equipment, and/or vehicles(s) must vacate the campground for a period of 48 hours before returning for another stay.
  • Several areas and trails within the park remain closed due to unsafe conditions. Observe informational signs, handouts and closures.
  • Group Camps A and B are currently closed.
